Nancy Dunaway
"I am a layerist, and approach my art holistically, seeking both personal and communal meaning in my image making. Images and their making are essential to me. Narrative or story is important to me and to my images. It is all a form of spiritual practice.
Whether I am creating a 2–D work on paper, a 3–D altarpiece or a one of a kind, artist’s book, I work in mixed media and enjoy the process of making my art. I say I work in an eclectic manner, which really means I do whatever comes to me at the moment and find a way to express it in what ever form it dictates. I think art making is a dialogue between me and the work. I put something down, it tells me where to go next. I try to listen.
I often write underneath or into the work itself as a further expression of my experience. The words themselves lend their energy to the piece, but are not always meant to be read by the viewer; instead they are meant to function as a design element or a texture to make the surface of the work more interesting. My work deals with personal issues, stories or experiences from my own life. It is a reflection of my own journey… The layers within each piece are a physical manifestation of the layers of my life — different media, different images, all piling on top of each other — fragments of the present, past, and perhaps the future floating through the mind.
I work from my center and hope that energy will allow the viewer to connect to his/her own center. I believe art has the power to influence and to transform. It is my responsibility as an artist to create my work with intent, yet remain open to the possibilities that exist in the process."
