the society of layerists in multi–media
SLMM Gallery Project

The SLMM Gallery Project is intended to open a visual and written dialog between all SLMM members scattered over thousands of miles. Every quarter the members will be given a new theme to interpret and address in any media they choose. They are also asked to provide an artist statement linking their work to the current theme. This project is open to all SLMM members. Enjoy!

Theme: afterthought
January — March, 2012

Barbara Leites
"Life Partners"

"This painting, which is an abstraction conceptually, includes images of my parents. As I viewed it post completion, I realized, as in an ‘afterthought’, that there are two sets of ‘arms’ which are the horizontal bands extending on either side of the ‘torso’ abstract vertical shape. I assume the more unconscious part of the creation process prevailed. All the "words" are hand painted and not collage elements and part of the two figures’ background history."

"Time piece…"

af•ter•thought (n.) something not thought of, said, or done originally, but added afterward

"Time is the only thing that keeps going and one cannot alter it or stop it. It is the moments that can stop in our minds just long enough to register. Would it not be wonderful to stop the time when one is happy? I hope I have achieved that in my little painting."

"A Thousand Years"

"‘Afterthought’ can refer to a re–examination,
a reversal, a flip–flop. "A Thousand Years" uses the juxtaposition of color and shapes to symbolize the historic cycles of war, peace, progress, regression. Use of complementary colors red and green emphasize this flip–flop, the high energy fire of red with the quiet balance of tranquil greens. The ancient Chinese black characters against gold, silver and white hues suggest the dark and the light, the old and the new, the past and the future."

"Afterthought to Unusual Clarity"

"Afterthought —
After the other thinking is done
and other decisions are made,
there is one more,
one little niggling thing,
an impulse rushing in to change the scene or a regret from the thing done less thoughtfully, leading to unusual clarity."

Barbara Ragalyi
"Streaking Time"

"After thinking this painting was finished I started feeling that something more was needed as it seemed rather blah to me. The yellow–orange spatter is the afterthought that made it more interesting as well as giving it greater dimension. I applied soft gel gloss so I could wipe off the acrylic if it didn’t work. I also practiced dripping the paint from its bottle as it had to be done in a quick motion."

"2011"

"Making this collage was a lot of fun.
The process was about how the colors related as the pieces were assembled.
I started with the big pieces and then followed with the smaller crosswise strips that separate the colors. The crosswise strips are the "afterthoughts." The collage paper with the number 2011 was straight from a magazine.
I hope the work communicates rhythm and energy and the joy of color."

"Some Basic Geometry"

"‘Some Basic Geometry’ was an experiment in stamping paint onto a surface using box lids. There are rectangles, ovals, and triangles. After the multiple stampings, I needed something that would stand out, so the afterthought was a glue stamp with gold leaf applied to it."

Richard Newman
"Inner Sanctum"

"This image is the product of reaching back in time some 40 years and reworking (with the aid of the computer) an older work which was a painting. Now it has a new life in a new form after all this time."

Carolyn WarmSun
"Honoring Heritage No. 3"

"I think this First Person/First Artist decided, as an afterthought, to put the bird on top of the head
of the Shaman — to denote the Shamanic power
of soaring visions, images, and thoughts."

"Afterthought — After — Klimt"

"An afterthought of a choice previously usually made results in improving my creative process. This face appeared while working the layers of the under painting. To improve my range, I sometimes use a palette of my least favorite colors as I did here. A synthesis of shapes, faces and designs evolved reminding me of Klimt and his struggle to revalue society through art."

"I Am Sorry (we ever met)"

"This painting was about relationships, some of which don't work. I usually put thoughts and feelings into whatever I am working on."

"Crazed Cranium"

"After one thought and then another, if we believe each thought, we can go crazy. Crazy in the head; "crazed in the cranium". Most of our thoughts are not true and limit our essential and real being: unlimited light energy potential. As we gain the skills and discipline to be equinimitous regarding our thoughts and thought patterns, we will breathe easier, be lighter, and fell freer. AFTER we let our THOUGHTS go: freedom may arise."

Mary Alice Braukman
"Memories Unlocked"

"I believe a painter’s work is a diary or a record of their life's journey. My painting become a myriad of techniques — layers of mixed media and then scraping back to under colors, found objects with collage of papers. I feel this painting is unlocking another passage of my life’s adventures. The act of painting and composing the found pieces is important to me. By watching the design develop, I begin to create a more personal statement. It is intuitive and records my personal experiences — my journey."

Vicky Lennon
"The Incident"

"As we travel through life we encounter many different experiences. Sometimes we do not want to think about or remember these times. Life continues. As an afterthought we try to find a way to make a good thing of a bad experience. ‘The Incident’ is part of my Happy Heart series. It is my hope that the paintings inspired by my heart attack will help others in a small way to be more mindful of their own health."

"The new year brings to mind the ever–changing seasons during a time of their own, regardless of cultural devotion. Water and the moon deliver their timeless refreshments."
